That was Feb. 28, 2006, when then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Yingluck's billionaire brother, was seeking to defuse protests against his rule by calling early elections, and the opposition Democrat Party refused to take part. In September that year, the army deposed Thaksin in a coup.
