Associated Press photographs From left, Afghan National Army soldiers Mirza Mirzali, a Pashtun; Mullah Assan, an ethnic Turkmeni; and Aijad, an ethnic Tajik, are representative of the various ethnicities in the army. Despite ethnic quotas, the Afghan army is still dominated by northern minorities who were oppressd by the Taliban. The Taliban is made up of mostly Pashtuns.
