Marilyn Monroe (June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s, emblematic of the era's attitudes towards sexuality. Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million by the time of her unexpected death in 1962. She continues to be considered a major popular culture icon. Monroe's troubled private life received much attention. She struggled with substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. She had two highly publicized marriages, to retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller, both of which ended in divorce. On August 5, 1962, in the middle of filming ‘Something's Got to Give’ she died at age 36 from an overdose of barbiturates at her home in Los Angeles.

Marilyn Monroe 1926-1962 - the actress and sex symbol was married three times, rumored to have had numerous affairs and made as much as 30 films. The final years of Monroe's life were marked by illness, personal problems, and a reputation for unreliability and being difficult to work with. The circumstances of her death, from an overdose of barbiturates, have been the subject of conjecture. Though officially classified as a 'probable suicide', the possibilities of an accidental overdose or a homicide have not been ruled out. She died at the age of 36. This undated photo provided by Heritage Auctions, shows a baseball signed by Joe DiMaggio, and decorated on the other side in 1992 by sports artist LeRoy Neiman with a likeness of Marilyn Monroe. What makes the baseball rare is that DiMaggio, who was briefly married to Monroe, famously refused to sign anything related to her, the auction house said. It is from the collection of bank marketing executive, which will be offered in a Heritage Auctions online sale on May 16. (AP Photo/Heritage Auctions)
