This One-Cent Magenta postage stamp printed in 1856 went on the auction block in New York City on June 8, 2021, where it sold for $8.3 million. The Magenta, printed in British Guiana (now Guyana), was created during a postage shortage when supplies from a colonial printer didn’t arrive. A schoolboy discovered it in a collection, and the rarity passed through the hands of several wealthy individuals in subsequent years. It last sold at auction in 2014 for nearly $10 million.
