Gerald Ford's library is located on the campus of his alma mater, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Ford began donating documents to the University long before his presidency, giving his congressional papers to the Bentley Historical Library as early as 1965. After his service as president, Ford offered to donate materials to a presidential library that was completed and opened to the public in 1981. The library mostly consists of White House staff papers as well as Federal records and some papers from his wife, Betty Ford. Ford's library is the only presidential library that is separated from its corresponding museum, which is located in Ford's hometown Grand Rapids, Michigan.
