Researchers from the United States Geological Survey check the levels of lamprey pheromone in traps being used as a part of a study on the Grand River on Monday, May 7, 2018. The study being conducted will provide estimates of the lamprey population in the Grand River and be a deciding factor in whether a "lampricide", the killing of lampreys, must be done. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to find out how many sea lampreys are in the Detroit River and other area waterways. A crew is expected to do an assessment from May 29 to June 7 that will help determine the need for measures to control the eel-like parasites, which attack fish such as trout, salmon and whitefish.
