The aircraft flown by Payson Norton has 260 horsepower, and a retractable landing gear, which increases the speed of the plane, and a constant speed propeller. Norton, 16, flew his aircraft solo for the first time on Friday, April 7, 2017. Norton's instructor, Jim Ballard, said he is his third student pilot to fly solo at the minimum age.
