Therman White is photographed in the Jesse Owens Memorial Museum, April 28, 2015, in Oakville, Ala. White grew up with obstacles: his race, poverty and Jim Crow laws designed to keep blacks separate and unequal. World War II changed all that. White served in the U.S. Navy in ammunition depots in Yorktown, Va., and Asbury Park, N.J. during the war. He said when he raised his hand to join the Navy he stepped into the middle class, a move that changed his life. (Gary Cosby Jr./The Decatur Daily via AP) MANDATORY CREDIT
