As world leaders gather in New York for the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly next week, they should deliberate the impact of Taiwan’s exclusion from the U.N. and search for new ways to bring Taiwan to the table.

This year’s assembly presents an opportune moment for world leaders to confront the implications of Taiwan’s exclusion from U.N. bodies, namely the World Health Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization and Interpol. Taiwan’s inclusion in the U.N. and other appropriate international organizations is important for Taiwan, the U.S. and the world at large.

Ignoring Taiwan’s existence hinders the world’s ability to develop comprehensive and effective solutions to a growing set of transnational issues. It’s time for the U.N. to recognize Taiwan’s voice. The U.S. and its allies should stand up for Taiwan by advocating its inclusion in these international forums.
