Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday said former President Donald Trump’s economic proposals will lead America into a recession, as she continues to pitch her economic platform to voters.
Ms. Harris, during her first one-on-one network television interview with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle, also said that she would have no choice but to raise taxes to pay for her domestic agenda.
Asked about Mr. Trump’s higher economic approval rating among voters, Ms. Harris fired back that the former president would “invite a recession by the middle of next year.”
She later repeated the claim, saying that “top economists” have compared her economic plan with the policies endorsed by Mr. Trump and reached a similar conclusion.
“Some of them have actually assessed that his plan would increase inflation and invite a recession by the middle of next year,” she said.
Ms. Harris warned that Mr. Trump lost 200,000 manufacturing jobs during his administration, saying that his economic proposals would “shrink the economy.”
Ms. Harris also insisted she would have no choice but to raise corporate taxes to fund her domestic agenda. She has proposed raising the corporate tax rate to 28% from its current level of 21%.
“We have to raise corporate taxes,” She said. “We are going to have to make sure the biggest corporations and billionaires pay their fair share. I’m not mad at anyone for achieving success, but they should pay their fair share.”
Again, citing unnamed experts, Ms. Harris said she works with a lot of “CEOs and business leaders who are part of the engine of America’s economy,” and they agree that “the rich should pay their fair share.”
