Charging would-be Trump assassin Ryan Wesley Routh with a mere two gun crimes is not only a slap on the wrist, but a slap to the faces of former President Donald Trump and his family (“Judge denies bail to would-be Trump assassin,” web, Sept. 23).

Mr. Routh is a danger to society and should be facing life in prison with no chance of parole, not a mere 15 or 20 years. He attempted to assassinate Mr. Trump and said so in a chilling letter, which he penned beforehand.

These light charges are the same old, same old, as the political left continues to understate and minimize attacks on Mr. Trump. When the former president was shot and the bullet grazed his ear, FBI Director Christopher Wray suggested that Mr. Trump has been struck by a firecracker. And the left wanted proof that it was a bullet that had injured Mr. Trump. These are attempts to downplay the seriousness of the situation.

It would be a criminal injustice for Mr. Routh to be released from prison.
