The Democratic National Committee is celebrating Labor Day by labeling former President Donald Trump “an anti-union scab” who has made life harder for workers.
The national party announced Monday it had erected 19 bilingual billboards in the battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, “holding Trump accountable for his anti-labor record.”
“Vice President [Kamala] Harris and Governor Tim Walz, a former union member himself, know that workers are the engine powering this country, and that’s why they have always had their backs,” DNC spokesperson Maddy Mundy said in a statement. “Trump is a union buster who sought to withhold pay from union workers and weaken unions as president in order to fatten the pockets of multi-billionaire executives who donate to his campaign.”
“Simply put: Trump is an anti-union scab,” Ms. Mundy said.
The effort is a reminder of how the Labor Day weekend often turns into a battle over which of the two major political parties is the most pro-worker.
Ms. Harris plans to headline a rally Monday afternoon in Detroit and join President Biden to honor workers and union members at a campaign rally Monday night in Pittsburgh.
Mr. Trump, meanwhile, is staying out of the public eye after a busy couple of weeks of campaigning.
The Republican nominee and Ms. Harris are locked in a competitive battle a little over a month after Mr. Biden exited the race following a disastrous debate performance with Mr. Trump.
Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris are slated to meet on the debate stage for the first time next week in Philadelphia.
