Former President Donald Trump pledged to “get SALT back” as he prepares to head to Long Island, New York, for a rally.
The State and Local Tax deduction allows taxpayers to deduct those taxes from their federally taxable income. Mr. Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 that capped SALT at $10,000.
“I will turn it around, get SALT back, lower your Taxes, and so much more,” Mr. Trump posted Tuesday on Truth Social. “I’ll work with the Democrat Governor and Mayor, and make sure the funding is there to bring New York State back to levels it hasn’t seen for 50 years.”
The legislation he signed in 2017 affected states that have higher taxes, like New York.
However, New York Democrats are already skeptical of the former president’s plan.
“Donald Trump took away your SALT dedications and hurt so many Long Island families. Now, he’s coming to Long Island to pretend he supports SALT,” Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer posted Tuesday on X. “It won’t work.”
After Mr. Trump’s post, Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, New York Republican, posted a salt shaker on his X account. Mr. D’Esposito, along with fellow New York Republican Rep. Nick LaLota, have tried to get the SALT cap lifted, but the bill failed in the House earlier this year.
Mr. Trump will visit the Nassau Coliseum on Wednesday for a rally in the Empire State.
“It will be PACKED with Patriots! We have a real chance of winning, for the first time in many decades, New York,” he posted.
“What the hell do you have to lose?” he wrote in all caps. “Vote for Trump!”
