Republican Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina collapsed during an event in Washington late Tuesday and had to be taken to the hospital.

His son, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, provided an update on his condition on X.

“I just spoke to my mom who is currently at the hospital with my father. Doctors have confirmed to us that he has experienced stroke-like symptoms,” Mr. Wilson wrote. “I was able to speak with him moments ago and I am incredibly thankful that he is stable and being monitored by medical professionals.”

The congressman, 77, collapsed at the Ukraine House, a cultural center that promotes the Eastern European nation and its democracy, in Northwest Washington, according to Politico.

Mr. Wilson has been a House member since 2001. He is a member of the House Republican Policy Committee and a member of the House GOP leadership as an assistant Republican whip.

He famously shouted, “You lie!” during President Barack Obama’s joint address to Congress in 2009.

Mr. Obama had been assuring lawmakers his health care plan would not insure illegal immigrants.
