Vice President Kamala Harris warned American voters against reelecting former President Donald Trump, because of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling giving presidents presumed immunity for official actions.
During Tuesday’s debate hosted by ABC News, Ms. Harris said the former president “would essentially be immune from any misconduct if he were to enter the White House again.”
She said he has threatened to weaponize the Justice Department against political enemies and “terminate” the Constitution.
“Understand what it would mean if Donald Trump were back in the White House with no guardrails,” Ms. Harris said. “The court won’t stop him.
“It is up to the American people to stop him,” she added.
The Supreme Court’s conservative majority in a 6-3 decision in July found that a president has immunity for core official acts and presumed immunity for some other official conduct but no immunity for unofficial acts.
The ruling was seen as a win for Mr. Trump because it delayed criminal proceedings against him while lower courts grappled with what charges could stand in his federal election fraud case pending in Washington.
