Former President Trump on Tuesday distanced himself from remarks he made last week acknowledging his 2020 presidential loss, saying it was a sarcastic response to a question.
“I said that sarcastically, you know that. ‘Oh we lost by a whisker,’ It was said sarcastically,” Mr. Trump said during the presidential debate.
Mr. Trump told podcaster Lex Fridman last week that he lost the 2020 election by “a whisker,” a rare departure from his usual rhetoric about the 2020 presidential election results, which he often claims were rigged.
“I was told if I got 63 million, which is what I got the first time, ‘You would win. You can’t not win and I got millions more votes than that and lost by a whisker,” Mr. Trump said in the interview.
Mr. Trump said it was important that Americans have confidence in their elections, describing the nation’s election system as “bad.”
He said that his lawsuits charging election fraud were tossed by federal judges because he didn’t have standing. He said that no judge ever looked at the merits of his cases.
Mr. Trump said he could reveal “so many facts and statistics” showing that he won in 2020.
Vice President Kamala Harris said Mr. Trump’s refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election proves that he is unfit for office.
“You did, in fact, lose that election,” she said, saying his denial of the election results is evidence he doesn’t have the temperament to be president.
