Malcolm Brogdon’s Washington Wizards debut will have to wait. The point guard is recovering from a surgery that repaired a torn ligament in his right thumb, the team said Tuesday.

The 31-year-old suffered the injury on Saturday during a preseason practice in Montreal. The Wizards did not offer a potential recovery timeline on Tuesday, noting that the veteran’s status would be “updated as appropriate.”

The Wizards added Brogdon in a trade shortly before this year’s NBA draft. Washington sent forward Deni Avdija to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Brogdon, two first-round picks and two second-round picks.

Wizards general manager Will Dawkins used Portland’s first-rounder, the No. 14 selection, to select Pittsburgh guard Bub Carrington in this year’s draft.

Brogdon, a University of Virginia product, averaged 15.4 points per game during stints with the Trail Blazers, the Indiana Pacers, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Celtics. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2017 and Sixth Man of the Year in 2023.
