Baltimore police said a shootout between a teenager and a legal gun owner early Tuesday left both persons wounded and the juvenile fighting for his life.

Authorities said the 17-year-old boy first approached the 31-year-old man around 2:15 a.m. while the man was sitting in his car in the Brewers Hill neighborhood.

The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) said the man saw the boy coming at him and pulled out his licensed handgun, prompting the two to trade gunfire.

Both individuals, neither of whom was immediately identified, got off shots and hit the other.

The boy fell to the ground and became unresponsive, according to police, while the man left the area and flagged down a police officer on a nearby block.

BPD said the boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The older man was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.
