Former President Donald Trump asked the crowd at his rally in New Mexico Thursday if they thought Vice President Kamala Harris was happy with the recent comment made by President Biden referring to Trump supporters as “garbage.”
“Do you think she feels good about the language that he’s been using lately, like calling us all garbage? Can you imagine the phone calls?” Mr. Trump asked supporters.
Holding his hand up to his ear like a phone, he went through an imaginary phone call between Ms. Harris and Mr. Biden.
“‘What the hell are you doing, Joe? Please, Joe, I’m trying. Joe, I’m at a big disadvantage. I’m at a big — you know — they say I’m not smart, then you go and you make it more difficult for me, Joe. What are you doing, Joe?’” Mr. Trump said.
He imitated a response from Mr. Biden: “‘Well, that’s the way I feel.’”
“‘Cause that is the way he feels, probably,” Mr. Trump said.
Mr. Biden’s comment sounded as if he was referring to Trump supporters as “garbage.” The White House has maintained that he was talking about “the hateful rhetoric [by a comedian] at the [pro-Trump] Madison Square Garden rally as garbage.”
Ms. Harris tried to distance herself from both comments.
“I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for,” she said.
The conversation was started after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage” while at the Trump rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
Mr. Trump segued the conversation into the topic of illegal immigration.
He said on Day One in office, he would “launch the largest deportation program in American history.”
The former president said he was calling for the death penalty “for any migrant that kills an American citizen or law enforcement officer.”
