Former President Donald Trump urged his followers to forgive President Biden for calling them human garbage.
At a rally Tuesday evening in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Mr. Trump was told by Sen. Marco Rubio that earlier in the day, Mr. Biden had railed against a joke told about Puerto Rico at an earlier Trump rally.
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Mr. Biden said, according to video of the conference call.
The former president was magnanimous, but in a backhanded way.
“He doesn’t know. You have to please forgive him. Please forgive him for not knowing what he said,” Mr. Trump said. “Terrible, terrible, terrible to say a thing like that. But he really doesn’t know. He really, honestly, he doesn’t.”
Mr. Trump also said the remarks reminded him of Hillary Clinton’s notorious “basket of deplorables” comment in 2016.
