Oscar winner Mel Gibson maligned Vice President Kamala Harris while announcing he’s backing former President Donald Trump in the election.
In a video published Thursday evening by TMZ, the actor spoke briefly to a cameraman at an airport, where he took a shot at Ms. Harris’ intelligence.
“I know what it’ll be like if we let her in,” Mr. Gibson said. “And that ain’t good. Miserable track record. No policies to speak of. She’s got the IQ of a fence post.”
In addition to comparing Ms. Harris to a plank of wood, he endorsed Mr. Trump.
“I don’t think it’s going to surprise anyone who I vote for,” Mr. Gibson told the cameraman, who responded: “I’m gonna guess Trump. Is that a bad guess?”
“I think that’s a pretty good guess,” Mr. Gibson said.
Mr. Gibson was one of the hottest actors of the 1980s and 1990s until he was filmed making antisemitic remarks during a July 2006 arrest for driving under the influence in Malibu, California.
After the arrest, his career stalled and he took only bit parts or larger roles in independent movies. He had a comeback in 2016 with the war drama “Hacksaw Ridge,” which landed him an Academy Award for best director.
Mr. Gibson has largely stayed out of the political fray, unlike other celebrities such as George Clooney and Julia Roberts, who are all-in for Ms. Harris.
In 2021, Mr. Gibson was filmed saluting Mr. Trump at a UFC match. Earlier this year, Mr. Trump expressed his fondness for Mr. Gibson on his social media platform Truth Social.
Mr. Trump shared a meme of a clean-cut Mr. Gibson alongside the actor’s battle-worn look in the 1995 movie “Braveheart.” The caption read, “Me voting for Trump” in 2016 and 2024, respectively.
The former president added, “Either way, Mel Gibson is GREAT!”
