The Washington Commanders released former first-round pick Jamin Davis on Tuesday.
The team’s top pick in the 2021 draft transitioned from linebacker to defensive end this offseason, but it wasn’t enough to maintain a roster spot as the season wore on. In five games this year, the 25-year-old recorded 13 tackles without a sack.
Davis struggled to find a consistent role in a crowded defensive line room, losing playing time to free-agent signings Dorance Armstrong and Clelin Ferrell and rookie pass rusher Javontae Jean-Baptiste.
General manager Adam Peters declined Davis’ fifth-year option in the spring — he was slated to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
In 50 games with the Commanders, the Kentucky product recorded 282 tackles, seven sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception.
With the release of Davis, only one first-round pick from former coach Ron Rivera’s much-maligned tenure remains: cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr.
