Why did the Founding Fathers, the framers of our Constitution, create the Electoral College when it came to selecting our nation’s president?

In the most general terms, it was because they did not trust the “will of the people” (I certainly don’t!), but more specifically, it was because they did not want just a few states with very large populations to monopolize the electoral process. Remember, we have a “representative democracy.”

The Electoral College was designed to level the playing field so that all the states, even the smaller ones, could have a substantial say in who becomes everyone’s president. I was taught as much by a very liberal professor (good for him). That’s exactly what the Electoral College is for — and that’s all it’s for.

Anyone who claims to want to get rid of the Electoral College either desires some form of state dictatorship, is pandering to a certain segment of the electorate to get their support or has no idea why our electoral process was designed the way it was in the first place.
