Speaker Mike Johnson predicted Americans will base their votes in next month’s presidential election on policy, not personalities — and that’s what will deliver the White House for the GOP.
“Put the rhetoric aside. Look at the record of these two candidates. This shouldn’t be about personalities,” the Louisiana Republican said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday. “It should be about policy. And I think people are looking at that seriously, and that’s why I’m convinced we’re going to win.”
Mr. Johnson and host Jake Tapper went back and forth over Donald Trump’s fitness for the office, with Mr. Tapper citing comments made by the former president at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Mr. Johnson argued that Mr. Trump can fill a rally room and talk for hours.
“So he has fun at the rallies. He says things that are off the cuff. But I’m telling you, I have been in those events,” he said. “I have been in those arenas and people have a great time at those arenas. So you can cherry-pick a few words or lines out of a two-hour event.”
Mr. Johnson said there’s “an energy” in the country.
“I’m convinced that we are going to win the White House, the Senate, and the House. And we’re going to have a very aggressive agenda to get the economy going again, to help everyone,” he said.
