The recent indictment of New York Mayor Eric Adams is a strange political move (“’I became a target’’: NYC Mayor Eric Adams links migrant crisis criticism to criminal charges,” web, Sept. 30).

The intention seems to be to remove (or at least cripple) a prominent Democratic critic of our open borders. New York City’s White, leftist elites were shocked when Mr. Adams won the mayoral race over their candidates. They have never made his job easy, but now this. I guess they wanted to hammer home a message to Democratic politicians in general (don’t speak out on immigration before November) and destroy Mr. Adams, who is up next year for reelection, at the same time. But it is odd.

Mr. Adams was elected by minority voters in the city who were fed up with crime and being ignored by the leftists in power. At a time when minorities are looking away from the left for answers, this will only throw gasoline on the fire.

I have heard from friends in the outer boroughs that some minorities believe the Upper East Side elites are moving to metaphorically put them “back on the plantation.” I am going to watch this to see if it has any ripple effect elsewhere, especially among Black and Hispanic voters.

A protest vote could do real damage to the left.
