The Supreme Court announced Friday it will hear a major case in six weeks involving a state ban on medical treatment for transgender minors.
The court’s year-end calendar was released and revealed the case of U.S. v. Skrmetti is scheduled for Dec. 4, though a ruling is not expected until the term wraps up at the end of June.
The legal battle involves Tennessee’s law banning puberty blockers and surgeries for transgender youth.
The Justice Department and the American Civil Liberties Union oppose Tennessee’s ban on the treatments for minors.
The ACLU said courts have rejected such prohibitions on medical treatment for transgender youths in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana and Kentucky.
But the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals let Tennessee’s ban take effect.
The Tennessee case was brought by three transgender minors, their parents and a doctor who had 16 transgender youths as patients who are challenging the ban.
