OPINION:
I consider human life to be more significant than the cost of bacon. And because of this, illegal immigration is the central issue I will be considering when casting my vote for president.
On June 17, 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray was sexually assaulted and killed. Two illegal immigrants from Venezuela have been charged with murder in her death (“Venezuelan prison gang fuels U.S. crime wave, ducks American law enforcement,” web, Oct. 4).
She would be alive today had President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris simply left Donald Trump’s border policies in place. Instead, during its first year, the Biden-Harris administration implemented 89 executive orders that swung our nation’s door wide open to at least 10 million illegal immigrants.
Unfortunately, the Biden-Harris border policies have produced a roster of victims beyond Jocelyn Nungaray. To compare fiscal year 2021 and fiscal year 2022 under Biden-Harris with comparable years in Donald Trump’s presidency, homicide and manslaughter convictions for illegal immigrants increased by nearly 2,000%.
On Oct. 16, Fox News’ Brett Baier interviewed Ms. Harris. He asked her whether she thought she owed the mother of Jocelyn Nungaray an apology. She rebuffed the invitation and pivoted instead to her familiar, increasingly vitriolic condemnation of Mr. Trump.
Ms. Harris also brought up two bills that would have done nothing to mitigate illegal immigration. The first, from January 2021, was merely an instrument for illegal immigrant citizenship. The second, more recent bill allocated the lion’s share of funding to Ukraine and Israel. Yet it still would have allowed in nearly 1.5 million illegal immigrants per year, lifted the cap for legal immigration and again provided an avenue to citizenship.
The goal of the Biden-Harris administration seems to be to grant citizenship to the untold millions of illegal immigrants residing within our borders. And if it comes at the expense of a few hundred or thousand hapless individuals like young Jocelyn Nungaray, so be it.
