Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Atlanta for a campaign rally amid early voting that’s shattering records in Georgia.
The campaign didn’t provide details on the time or location of her rally but said she would urge Georgians to vote early.
Ms. Harris’ visit comes as the fight for the battleground state heats up, with the Nov. 5 election less than three weeks away.
Georgia voters flocked to the polls Tuesday, the first day of early voting, and cast 328,000 ballots. That broke the previous record set in 2020 when 136,000 people voted early, according to data from the Georgia secretary of state’s office.
The early voting may have yielded good news for Ms. Harris. Fulton County, home of Atlanta and heavily Democratic, cast the highest number of votes Tuesday. It was followed by Democratic Cobb, DeKalb and Gwinnett counties.
Meanwhile, three solidly Republican counties, which former President Donald Trump won easily in 2020, accounted for just under 9% of all votes cast on Georgia’s first day of voting.
While Ms. Harris may be excited about the early voting results, her lead in the Peach State has evaporated over recent weeks. As recently as Sept. 1, Ms. Harris held a nearly 1% lead over Mr. Trump in Georgia. As of Thursday, Mr. Trump’s lead has increased to 1.8%, according to an aggregate of several polls by FiveThirtyEight.
A separate poll by Quinnipiac University said Mr. Trump has a 7-point edge over Ms. Harris, with 52% of support compared with 45% who say they favor the vice president.
