Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday addressed Israel’s killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar by saying he was a terrorist whose actions killed Americans and threatened stability in the Middle East.
“Justice has been served,” Ms. Harris said at a campaign event at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The Democratic nominee said the fate of Hamas remains unclear following Sinwar’s death, but she will not accept a Middle East with Hamas in power.
“It is time for the day to begin without Hamas in power, we will not give up on these goals,” she said, adding that Sinwar’s death creates an opportunity to end the war in the Gaza territory.
Ms. Harris concluded her brief remarks without taking questions from reporters traveling with her. She was scheduled to take journalists’ questions ahead of an event with UWM students, but abruptly canceled it and delivered the statement instead.
Ms. Harris was at UWM along with Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban for what her campaign had billed as a “meet and greet” with the UWM students.
Pro-Palestinian protesters, however, stormed the event, chanting and carrying signs near the Lunar Entrepreneurship Center on the UWM campus.
The protesters chanted “Free Palestine,” and “Shame!” with bullhorns. Several protesters were screaming that UWM has “blood on its hands” for inviting Ms. Harris to campus.
Some protesters carried signs with slogans ranging from “VP Harris we charge you with genocide!” “Bombing kids is not self-defense” and “Killer Kamala.”
