Sen. J.D. Vance said the Republican Party needs to earn “American people’s trust back” when it comes to women’s reproductive rights.
Mr. Vance, Ohio Republican and former President Donald Trump’s running mate, acknowledged on the debate stage Tuesday night that many Americans don’t agree with the abortion stance he has taken.
“As a Republican who proudly wants to protect innocent life in this country, who proudly wants to protect the vulnerable, is that my party, we’ve got to do so much better of a job at earning the American people’s trust back on this issue where they frankly, just don’t trust us,” Mr. Vance said.
He said he wants the GOP to be “pro-family in the fullest sense of the word.”
“I want us to support fertility treatments. I want us to make it easier for moms to afford to have babies. I want it to make it easier for young families to afford a home so they can afford a place to raise that family,” he said. “And I think there’s so much that we can do on the public policy front just to give women more options.”
He defended Mr. Trump’s view of leaving the issue of abortion to the states.
“I think that’s what makes the most sense in a very big, a very diverse, and let’s be honest, sometimes a very, very messy and divided country,” he said.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, argued that women’s rights and pro-family policies don’t need to clash and he defended his Roe v. Wade-esque policy that he signed in Minnesota.
“Just mind your own business on this. Things work best when Roe vs. Wade was in place. When we do a restoration of Roe that works best. That doesn’t preclude us from increasing funding for children,” Mr. Walz said.
