After ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel teared up while mourning President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith said he would have taken a different tack.

Mr. Smith, a host on ESPN’s “First Take,” told Fox News personality and former “First Take” contributor Will Cain on the latter’s podcast Thursday that “I would have tried to be a bit funny and humorous with it and let everybody know it’s not gloom and doom.”

“We’ve dealt with a lot in our society and we are going to deal with a lot more in years to come long after Donald Trump is gone, no matter what you think. … I’m not crying over the fact that Donald Trump is the president,” he added.

Mr. Smith, who told Mr. Cain that he didn’t vote for Mr. Trump, also said voters sent a message with the election’s result.

at this c“In light of the way thountry was going, its strong lean to the progressive left essentially hijacking the liberal party, the Democratic Party … I don’t think there’s any question that the American people made their voices heard … he didn’t win, he annihilated [Vice President Kamala Harris],” Mr. Smith said.

On his talk show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” on Wednesday, Mr. Kimmel said Election Day was bad for immigrants, women, health care, the climate, the press, the poor, older Americans on Social Security, justice, free speech, Ukraine, NATO and democracy.

Mr. Kimmel also said the election was a bad night for “everyone who voted against [Mr. Trump]. And guess what? It was a bad night for everyone who voted for him, too.”

Both ABC and ESPN are owned by Disney.
