Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a hamstring injury against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, and surgery to repair it could keep him off the field the rest of the season.
Prescott hasn’t gone on injured reserve, which would keep him out a minimum of four weeks.
Sources told NFL Network reporter Jane Slater on Wednesday that Prescott suffered a partial tear of his hamstring tendon away from his bone.
Prescott and his team are seeking multiple opinions on what to do next, according to Slater, though partial avulsions typically take longer than four weeks to heal. The treatment plan would determine whether Prescott takes the field again this season.
If Cowboys officials determine the tendon can heal on its own, Prescott could return to play this year. If it requires surgery he would be done until next season, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Since 2016, the Cowboys have gone 76-46 with Prescott and 9-8 without him. He missed 11 games in 2020 with a broken ankle, a game in 2021 due to a calf strain, and five games in 2022 with a fractured thumb.
Cowboys backup Cooper Rush, who had a 5-1 record while filling in for Prescott in 2021 and 2022, went 13 for 25 for 115 yards and a touchdown in relief in their 27-21 loss in Atlanta.
Dallas, third in the NFC East at 3-5, plays host to the second-place Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
