House Republicans earned their first election pick-up early Wednesday as they flipped an open House seat in Michigan.

Republican Tom Barrett beat Democrat Curtis Hertel in Michigan’s 7th District, which includes the capital of Lansing and surrounding counties. He was leading by nearly 4 points when The Associated Press called the race.

Mr. Barrett, an Army veteran, will replace Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who is running for the open Senate seat against former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers. The Senate race is still uncalled, but Ms. Slotkin is trailing Mr. Rogers by 2 points with 87% of the votes counted.

Tuesday’s victory is a turn of fortunes for Mr. Barrett, who lost to Ms. Slotkin by 5 points in 2022.

The GOP pick up in Michigan comes after Democrats flipped two seats in New York. Many competitive House races have yet to be called, so it’s not yet clear which party will control the chamber next Congress.
