OPINION:
Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, said on X after Kamala Harris lost, “Congratulations to Donald Trump on being elected. The friendship between Canada and the U.S. is the envy of the world. I know President Trump and I will work together to create more opportunity, prosperity and security for both of our nations.”
Let the sucking up begin. This is hardly the oh so friendly tone Trudeau has struck when talking all things Trump in the past.
For a refresher: Trudeau in 2023 said, “What we’re seeing from these MAGA conservatives is an approach on going back on fundamental rights in ways we shouldn’t be seeing.” That was to a journalist with The Canadian Press — and he went on during that same interview to tal about “MAGA conservatives” and say, “The threat is real.”
After January 6, Trudeau swiped Trump.
“What we witnessed was an assault on democracy by violent rioters, incited by the current president and other politicians,” he said at a news conference.
And while Trump was campaigning — before he won the White House the second time — word on the Canadian streets was Trudeau was anything but enamored with the idea of another MAGA America.
“The relationship between Trudeau and Trump is poor,” political analyst Aaron Ettinger said to CTVNews.ca, in June. “If Trump is elected and Trudeau remains prime minister, they would be restarting the relationship from a place of mistrust.”
That was Trudeau then.
The Trudeau of now is singing a different tune.
Let the gaslighting begin. Let the sucking up begin.
Trudeau is hardly the only anti-MAGA, anti-Trumper to strike this new sudden tone of friendship and cooperation.
French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on X he is “ready to work together” with Trump, just as they “did during four years.” That’s very different from Macron’s warning to Europe in 2019 of Trump causing the “brain death of NATO” and Trump’s America “turning its back on us.”
Billionaire Mark Cuban, the long-running business world mouthpiece for Kamala Harris, who just said Trump doesn’t surround himself with “strong, intelligent women,” put out a “Congrats @realDonaldTrump” message on social media, as well as a “Congrats to @ElonMusk” and “#Godspeed” note. We can all just get along now, it seems.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also took to X with a happy note.
“Congratulations to @realDonaldTrump on his impressive election victory! I recall our great meeting with President Trump back in September, when we discussed in detail the Ukraine-U.S. strategic partnership, the Victory Plan and ways to put an end to Russian aggression against Ukraine,” Zelensky posted.
Hmm.
That’s odd.
Because in September, during an interview with The New Yorker, Zelensky was actually saying this: “My feeling is that Trump doesn’t really know how to stop the war even if he might think he knows how. With this war, oftentimes, the deeper you look at it the less you understand. I’ve seen many leaders who were convinced they knew how to end it tomorrow, and as they waded deeper into it, they realized it’s not that simple.”
My, what a difference 277 electoral votes makes.
Trump has done what the haters said he could never do; he has survived two assassination attempts, numerous attacks in the courts, a years-long campaign of slander and libel and unjustified, unfounded, unproven and largely fabricated accusations and allegations all aimed at tearing MAGA apart at the seams — and he’s risen from the ashes to win once again the White House. He’s president once again. Maybe even more importantly, he’s commander in chief once again.
And now everyone from foreign leaders and foreign dignitaries to billionaire businessmen and more are trying to quickly turn their open MAGA hatred into “MAGA! My amigo!”
As they should.
But let’s not forget: These are the same people who hated Donald Trump, who continue to hate Donald Trump, and who will work tirelessly, though more quietly, since he’s won, to undercut everything MAGA once he is inaugurated in January and assumes the White House office.
Let’s never forget: To these people, MAGAs are garbage.
