Elon Musk’s xAI is set to start a ChatGPT-like app.

According to a new report in The Wall Street Journal, xAI is preparing to launch the app that would give users access to the company’s AI chatbot, Grok. The app will likely go live after xAI finishes its funding round, which could end as early as next Wednesday.

Analysts expect the current funding round to boost the valuation of xAI significantly, fetching the company around $5 billion with the backing of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey and Fidelity.

A stand-alone app for xAI could intensify competition with OpenAI. OpenAI’s ChatGPT app remains the most popular AI chatbot after snatching more than 500,000 downloads in its first week.

Currently, xAI’s Grok chatbot is accessible only through X, the social media app owned by Mr. Musk. On that platform, users must be X Premium or Premium+ subscribers to use the chatbot. It’s unclear if the stand-alone app will be free to use or if users will need to enter their X information to access Grok.
