OPINION:
The daffodils I ordered from a well-established firm in Northern Ireland were recently destroyed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture because I did not have an “import permit” for them.
Meanwhile, other permitless home gardener customers’ orders arrived unscathed. This was the first time the USDA had required individuals to have this permit, and the implementation was totally random.
The USDA homepage explains the incompetence and inefficiency this way: “Our Priorities: Advancing racial justice, equity and opportunity. Addressing climate change. Tackling food and nutrition insecurity. More, better and new market opportunities.”
Bring it on, Elon Musk.
