The Big 12 is investigating how a video of BYU football player Tyler Batty’s explicit halftime speech from Saturday’s 28-23 loss to Arizona State appeared on social media, coach Kalani Sitake said Monday.

Batty’s address to the team appeared to violate his predominantly Mormon school’s honor code, which prohibits students from using “profane and vulgar language.”

“I see a bunch of m—————-, including myself, that ain’t showing that s—-,” Batty, a team captain, said in the video while his team trailed 21-3.

A recording of the speech, which was initially posted to TikTok, was recorded outside of the BYU locker room at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.

BYU has not announced any discipline for Batty, whose teammates are more concerned about the video than the speech.

“Obviously, not super appropriate, I don’t think, to have an employee of the school you’re at take a video of a private team moment like that,” fellow BYU captain Connor Pay told reporters on Monday. “But honestly, at the end of the day, we don’t care that much.”

Big 12 officials have not publicly commented on the video or the investigation, though Cougars coach Kalani Sitake confirmed that the athletic conference was looking into the incident.

“They’re handling all that and even the recording. They’re looking into all of that stuff,” he said on Monday. “They’ll deal with it. I trust the Big 12 leadership and just let them handle that.”

BYU almost completed an improbable comeback on Saturday night, as Arizona State fans charged the field with one second remaining in the game. It took 13 minutes for officials and security personnel to clear the field for a final play: a Hail Mary attempt that was ruled incomplete just short of the end zone.

The Big 12 has already fined Arizona State $25,000 for the field-storming incident.

“The safety of student-athletes and all game participants is our foremost priority,” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said in a statement. “We will continue to work with our institutions on event management policies at all Big 12 venues.”
