The Miami area may soon have President Donald J. Trump Avenue.
A proposal to name a street in the city of Hialeah after America’s once and future president is on the agenda for the Miami-Dade County Commission, scheduled for a vote Dec. 3.
Mr. Trump just became the first Republican this century to carry Dade County, winning by 11 points on his way to a lopsided victory in Florida and a nationwide win.
According to the Miami Herald, seven of the 13 commissioners on the nominally nonpartisan board are Democrats, but Mr. Trump won 10 of the 13 districts.
“I think President Trump is very worthy of this honor as our 45th and 47th president,” said Miami-Dade Commissioner Kevin Cabrera, a Republican and the measure’s sponsor. “I think our community clearly has overwhelming support for him based on the results of this last November.”
The Hialeah city commission voted last year, the Herald reported, to designate Palm Avenue as President Donald J. Trump Avenue, which would put the incoming president’s name on the city’s letterhead as the new address of City Hall — “501 President Donald J. Trump Avenue.”
The move does require the county commission to recognize it, which could put several Democrats in a ticklish position. According to the Herald, they have the option of just having none of them raise an objection, allowing the designation to pass en masse with other noncontroversial measures.
When such designations go to the Miami-Dade panel, they’re officially “co-designations,” added to existing street names in the county register rather than replacing them.
