President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday chose former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker as U.S. ambassador to NATO.
“Matt is a strong warrior and loyal patriot who will ensure the United States’ interests are advanced and defended. Matt will strengthen our relationship with our NATO allies and stand firm in the face of threats to peace and stability. He will put America first,” Mr. Trump said in a statement.
NATO was organized to defend Europe against attacks and has played a critical role in helping Ukraine during its nearly three-year war with Russia.
During his first administration, Mr. Trump criticized European countries for their low defense spending compared with the U.S.
Such pressure led those countries to boost their defense budgets.
Mr. Trump kept up the heat this year, saying he would let the Russians “do whatever the hell they want” if NATO member states didn’t meet their spending requirements.
The president-elect also named former Rep. Pete Hoekstra, Michigan Republican, to serve as ambassador to Canada. In a statement, Mr. Trump said Mr. Hoekstra will work for fair trade between the U.S. and Canada.
During Mr. Trump’s first term, Mr. Hoekstra served as the U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands.
In 2018, Mr. Trump tapped Mr. Whitaker to serve as acting attorney general between Jeff Sessions’ departure and William Barr’s confirmation.
Mr. Whitaker had served as chief of staff for Mr. Sessions until he was elevated to the top spot after his boss’ resignation in November 2018. His tenure leading the Justice Department lasted four months.
