MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski opened their program Monday with quite the revelation: They visited Mar-a-Lago to “restart communications” with President-elect Donald Trump after years of antipathy.

The “Morning Joe” co-hosts said it was the first time they’d seen Mr. Trump in seven years.

“We talked about a lot of issues, including abortion, mass deportation, threats of political retribution against political opponents and media outlets. We talked about that a good bit,” Mr. Scarborough said. “It will come as no surprise to anybody who watches this show, has watched it over the past year or over the past decade, that we didn’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of issues and we told him so.”

Ms. Brzezinski said it seemed reasonable to patch things up, given the country’s divisions and the fact that Mr. Trump is not seeking reelection.

She said Mr. Trump was upbeat during their meeting and that Democrats in Congress have discussed a “new approach” to working with Mr. Trump.

“We know this will be a consequential presidency. The question is whether it will be constructive,” she said.

“Morning Joe” is a morning news talk show that airs from 6 to 10 a.m. featuring Mr. Scarborough and Ms. Brzezinski, who are married, and other hosts.

The hosts are frequent critics of Mr. Trump and were blown away by his landslide victory earlier this month, calling it the biggest red wave since the Reagan era.

“Don’t be mistaken,” Mr. Scarborough said Monday. “We are not here to defend or normalize Donald Trump. We are here to report on him and to hopefully provide you insights that are going to better equip all of us in understanding these deeply unsettling times.”
