In what has been dubbed the “Bible trial,” Finnish parliamentarian Paivi Rasanen is once again the target of unrelenting prosecutors (“Politician on trial for sharing Bible verse, Christian views refuses to back down,” web, Nov. 17).

Sharing a Bible verse — once deemed innocuous — is now considered a criminal offense in Finland. Despite losing two court battles, Dr. Rasanen’s prosecutors have appealed to Finland’s Supreme Court to achieve their nefarious ends, according to The Washington Times.

But isn’t the Bible itself on trial in Finland? The trial has little to do with Dr. Rasanen, a physician, and everything in the world to do with her religion — or rather, her Christian faith. There was a time, after all, when a church that supported a Pride parade would have been scorned.

Why, then, should Dr. Rasanen be prosecuted for upholding a belief that Christians have embraced for two millennia? Finland’s Supreme Court would do well to take notice.
