Georgia coach Kirby Smart felt good about his team following a 31-17 win over No. 7 Tennessee on Saturday. But the two-time national champion questioned the College Football Playoff committee for his squad’s No. 12 ranking.
“I don’t know what they’re looking for. I really don’t,” Smart said after the game. “I wish they could really define the criteria. I wish they could do the eyeball test where they come down here and look at the people we’re playing against and look at them. You can’t see that stuff on TV.”
In last week’s rankings, Smart’s Bulldogs were the first team left out of the newly expanded 12-team bracket. Boise State held the final spot as the top team in the Mountain West.
Saturday’s win was a firm rebound after last week’s 28-10 loss to Ole Miss for Georgia. With the victory, the Bulldogs will almost certainly rise in this week’s rankings, which will debut on Tuesday.
“It was a week ago, a couple of hours, that we were dead and gone. People had written us off. It’s hard to play in this league, week in and week out, on the road,” Smart said. “[The committee is] not at Ole Miss in that environment. … They don’t know. They don’t understand that.”
Georgia (8-2) returns to action on Saturday against UMass (2-8).
