Kevin Costner applauded former Rep. Liz Cheney and said the Wyoming Republican should be applauded rather than threatened.

The liberal actor said Monday, during a town-hall edition of “The Michael Smerconish Program” on SiriusXM, that he was gratified that Ms. Cheney was one of the few people willing to break with her party.

“I’m very proud of Liz Cheney,” he said. “I found a person completely at odds with one side willing to stand up. We should applaud her. We should protect her.”

The Oscar-winning director, who also has starred in “Yellowstone,” “Bull Durham” and many other shows and films, noted that Ms. Cheney lost her seat in the 2022 Republican primary, despite Mr. Costner’s endorsement at the time, because of her dogged opposition to former President Donald Trump.

But he called that justified.

“I expect people in government to do the right thing. Public service is about public service. It’s not about your career. It’s not about your ego. Your four years is your four years,” he said.
