DENVER — Republican Gabe Evans declared victory Sunday in the razor-tight Colorado Congressional District 8 race after Democratic Rep. Yadira Caraveo conceded defeat.
“I am incredibly humbled to be chosen as the next Congressman for Colorado’s 8th. It is an honor to be entrusted with the job of representing you and your families, and I am ready to fight back for a better direction for all Coloradans,” said Mr. Evans in a statement.
Mr. Evans led by 48.98% to 48.2% with more than 95% of the vote counted.
Ms. Caraveo, a pediatrician who served one term in the newly created Front Range district, put out a statement Sunday thanking her family, supporters and volunteers, calling her brief stint in Congress “the honor of a lifetime.”
“While this isn’t the outcome we hoped for, the work is not over,” said Ms. Caraveo.
Mr. Evans, a state legislator and former police officer who flew Black Hawk helicopters in the Army, thanked his family and supporters for “their long hours and dedication to flipping this seat.”
“Thank you also to Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo for your service and gracious concession. I look forward to working with her and her team to transition this office over the next few months,” he said. “Most importantly, I give thanks to God. My faith in Him has sustained me throughout this 15-month campaign.”
