NEW YORK — Prosecutors rested their case against former President Donald Trump on Monday, clearing the way for Mr. Trump to mount his defense and setting the table for closing arguments after the Memorial Day break.

“Your honor, the people rest,” prosecutor Joshua Steinglass said.

The prosecution handed the reins to the defense after Michael Cohen, their star witness, testified across four days.

Defense lawyer Todd Blanche called an aide from his law office as his first witness so he could submit evidence about call logs.

The prosecution’s case hinges on whether Mr. Trump was actively involved in a scheme to pay hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels to avoid bad press near the 2016 election, and if he took part in an alleged scheme to conceal the money through reimbursements to Mr. Cohen.

Closing arguments are expected on the Tuesday after Memorial Day.

Mr. Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records and says he was paying Mr. Cohen’s legal fees and not participating in an election-related cover-up.
