Tesla plans to cut 601 jobs from its facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The company will lay off 223 workers at its Palo Alto facility and 378 at its Fremont plant, according to government filings Monday.
The layoffs will begin June 20 and are expected to affect mechanics, engineers and technicians.
The moves will bring the Tesla cuts this year above 3,000. That’s in keeping with CEO Elon Musk’s recent announcement that Tesla would cut 10% of its global workforce.
In mid-April, Tesla eliminated its entire Supercharger team, including executives responsible for the expansion of the program.
The company also has reduced hiring significantly, removing more than 3,000 open positions and eliminating its summer internship program.
The further cuts underscore a dark period for Tesla. While it continues to dominate the electric vehicle market in the U.S., increased domestic and international competition threatens Tesla’s top spot. Additionally, slowing demand for EVs has cut into the bottom line for the company, which reported record-low sales in its first quarter.
