President Biden sparred with Republicans over proposed cuts to Social Security in perhaps his strongest moment of his State of the Union speech Thursday night, an unscripted back-and-forth with his GOP opponents.
While talking about the need to protect the entitlement program, Mr. Biden accused Republicans of threatening to reduce Social Security in favor of more tax cuts for the wealthy.
That comment was met with a smattering of boos from the Republican lawmakers in the House chamber.
“Republicans can cut Social Security and give more tax breaks to the wealthy…,” a line that was met with fierce boos.
“That’s the proposal,” he continued while being interrupted with boos and shouts of “liar.”
Mr. Biden replied: “You guys don’t want another $2 trillion in tax cuts? I kind of thought that’s what your plan was. That’s good to hear.”
He then went on to propose making “the super wealthy pay their fair share.”
The exchange was part of Mr. Biden’s proposal to tax the country’s wealthiest individuals more, saying the money could cut the federal deficit and fund federal initiatives.
