Elon Musk, one of the world’s richest men, won’t be giving money to either of the expected presidential nominees this year.

“Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President,” he wrote Wednesday on X, the social media platform that he owns.

The announcement comes one week after the billionaire reportedly met with former President Donald Trump and a selection of key Republican donors in Florida. Mr. Trump has often praised Mr. Musk for his success in building his various businesses.

While Mr. Musk may not contribute directly to Mr. Trump or President Biden, he could still donate significant money to either campaign through a political action committee. He could also throw his weight behind a third-party candidate as the race tightens.

The news surprised fans of Mr. Musk, who have watched the X owner grow more outwardly political since taking over the social media platform in 2022. He has posted often about political topics such as diversity and transgender children.

Mr. Musk has also grown more conservative since taking the reins at X, even hosting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign announcement on the platform.
