Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin endorsed former President Donald Trump for president on Wednesday night, a day after Mr. Trump easily won almost all the GOP primaries during Super Tuesday, including the Commonwealth.
“It’s time to unite around strong leadership and policies that grow our great nation, not four more years of President Biden,” he said in a statement.
Mr. Youngkin praised Mr. Trump for his record on border security, reducing taxes and strong leadership.
“Voters in the Commonwealth and across the country have spoken loudly for President Donald J. Trump and I endorse him for president of the United States,” he said.
“His record on border security, restoring American leadership around the world, reducing taxes and lowering the cost of living for all Americans stands in stark contrast to the open borders, failed leadership on the global stage, rampant inflation and higher costs of today,” Mr. Youngkin said.
Mr. Trump won 63% of Republican primary voters in Virginia, giving him 39 delegates from the state.
Mr. Youngkin was considered by many to be a presidential or vice presidential contender himself, but his supporters’ hopes were dashed after he was unable in 2023 to lead Virginia Republicans to take control of the state Senate. Republicans even lost control of the House of Delegates in that election.
The Virginia Republican was often asked over the past year whether he would endorse Mr. Trump but usually dodged the question and said he would support the GOP nominee, whoever it was.
Mr. Trump endorsed Mr. Youngkin in 2021, when he successfully ran for governor against Democrat Terry McAuliffe.
Mr. Youngkin’s endorsement came hours after Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares released his endorsement of Mr. Trump.
