House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told Republicans to “get lost” with their plans for impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“Extreme MAGA Republicans are demanding a full impeachment trial in the Senate,” Mr. Jeffries, New York Democrat, wrote in an X post Thursday. “They want to continue the phony political stunt targeting the Homeland Security secretary.”
“My response? Get lost,” he said.
His post comes as two articles of impeachment passed by the House against Mr. Mayorkas are set to reach the Senate April 10.
The articles were passed by the House on Feb. 13, making Mr. Mayorkas the first sitting Cabinet secretary to be impeached. The first vote to impeach him failed, but the second passed by one vote.
Republicans have accused the secretary of not properly doing his job when it comes to securing the southern border.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, Louisiana Republican, has tried to pressure Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, to hold the Senate trial and hear arguments from the House’s impeachment managers.
“If he cares about the Constitution and ending the devastation caused by Biden’s border catastrophe, Senator Schumer will quickly schedule a full public trial and hear the arguments put forth by our impeachment managers,” Mr. Johnson said in a statement.
Mr. Schumer is expected to dismiss the articles of impeachment with just a simple majority vote or send them to a committee.
“As we have said previously, after the House impeachment managers present the articles of impeachment to the Senate, senators will be sworn in as jurors in the trial the next day,” Mr. Schumer’s office said. “Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray will preside.”
